Hoagland "Hoagy" Carmichael (1899-1981) was an American jazz composer, pianist, singer, actor, and bandleader. Carmichael grew up in Bloomington, Indiana, and graduated from the Indiana University (IU) School of Law. He composed hundreds of songs over the course of his career, but is best known for composing the music for "Stardust", "Georgia on My Mind", "The Nearness of You", and "Heart and Soul", four of the most-recorded American songs of all time.
